I am quite sure that we have all seen it at one time or another. Maybe some of you have seen it in person. It is the fresco in the Sistine Chapel in Rome by Michelangelo where God has reached out and touched the finger of Adam. God’s powerful arm is outstretched, and yet God is delicately touching man with His Divine finger as man becomes a living soul.

Michelangelo captured it as no one before or since – the omnipotence of Almighty God touching man, and the innocence of man touching God. Yes, those two fingertips touching each other – the Creator imparting life and the creature in his newness of life responding to God. Oh the profundity and yet simplicity, the distance and yet intimacy, the power and yet weakness of it all. The Divine finger and the human finger says it all. The scene somehow both satisfies reason and calls for faith.

“GOD, THE ANCIENT OF DAYS, IN THE FIRST INSTANCE

OF HIS CREATIVE POWER – AND CREATED MAN

IN HIS INFANCY AND CRADLE.”

There are in fact six distinct poses of the finger of God in Scripture, and we are about to see all six, and what they mean for man throughout the ages, and in particular for today. So let’s get started.

1. GOD’S FINGER OF CREATION

The Psalmist David captured the reality long before Michelangelo ever thought of it. The shepherd David had often rested on the Judean hills at night, and with the flock safely bedded down, he would look upward into the heavens with a poet’s eye. David would scan the starlit sky and would drink in the stunning and breathtaking beauty of God’s creation in the vast reaches of space. He would see the moon and the stars, and he would think to himself and say to God, “It is all the work of Thy fingers.”

More exactly, David wrote in Psalm 8:3,

“When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers,

the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained.”

My, my, my:

“THE SON, MOON AND STARS ARE BUT THE CELESTIAL

FINGERPRINTS OF GOD.”

We hear an echo of the very same as a testimony of wonder to the lovingkindness of the Lord, as we read in Psalm 136:1,5,7,8,9:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His

lovingkindness is everlasting,”

To Him Who made the heavens with skill, for His

lovingkindness is everlasting.”

“To Him Who made the great lights, for His

lovingkindness is everlasting.”

“The sun to rule by day, for His lovingkindness

is everlasting.”

“The moon and the stars to rule by night, for His

lovingkindness is everlasting.”

When we think of the word SKILL, we are drawn to admire the skillful hands and fingers of the artisan. I can barely draw a star on paper that captures to even the slightest degree any awesomeness and authenticity of the world of the stars. Mere doodling! The supernaturally skilled fingers of God created the Milky Way which is so long and so vast that it takes 100,000 years for light to cross from one edge to the other. That is not to mention the 75,000,000 + other galaxies, 50,000 of which are the size of the Big Dipper – Ursa Major!

You might say that God is really handy with His fingers. In fact, we read in Psalm 8:6 about the heavens with the moon and the stars that God has created as,

“…the work of Thy fingers.”

Literally, the work of God’s fingers in the Hebrew language means HANDIWORK. That word can also be translated NEEDLEWORK. Some kind of needlework, considering there are 93,000,000 miles between the sun and the earth.

If you will:

“THE HEAVENS, THE SUN, THE MOON, THE STARS

ARE ALL GOD’S CROCHETING – KNITTING.”

More to the point:

“SOMETHING THAT GOD DID IN HIS SPARE TIME

ON HIS WAY TO CREATING MAN.”

Now then, we must realize that none of this is irrelevant or unimportant stuff. Let me explain.

FIRST of all, we are living in the day of metaphor-mania. Nothing in the Bible is really how it is, and how it really is may never be known here on earth, because it is all contained in metaphors. The most that we can come away with from sermons these days is that we have been at a matinee of a Walt Disney animation-fiction movie. Adam and Eve have about as much realism these days as the main characters in a silent film.

As for instance, because God is Spirit (John 4:24), there is no way God could have a finger let alone fingers. God as Spirit is fingerless and handless, and the only reason we read about His finger/fingers and hand/hands is because God is speaking in anthropomorphisms to help us poor humans better relate to what is being said about God.

Well then by the same token, because man has a body and is a flesh being, then it would also follow that there is no way that he can have a spirit or a soul. To talk about man having a spirit is really just another anthropomorphism to better help him understand man in his relationship to the Spirit God. And so the metaphor-mania goes on and on, so that there is very little you can take from the Bible just for what it says anymore.

Oh stop it! When the Bible tells us about the finger/fingers and hand/hands of God, this simply means what it says, and that the great and only Spirit God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – has spirit fingers and hands. One day the saints will have spiritual bodies, that is, bodies without material substance (I Corinthians 15:44), and will then be more like God than they have ever been. So too those who metaphorize the Bible into nothing more than metaphoric hot air, we say that God does have finger/fingers, and if He wants to, He can put the world on a string and work it like a Yo-Yo on one finger.

Listen now, if we deliteralize and metaphorize the creation account, we will also end up deliteralizing and metaphorizing the recreation account. I love what Peter Marshall preached when he said, “Not a single one of the new powers discovered by man possesses any redeeming force. Neither fire, nor steam, nor explosives, nor electricity, nor atomic energy can change man’s nature.”

“The greatest force ever bestowed upon mankind streamed forth in blood and sweat and tears and death on Calvary….when Jesus of Nazareth was crucified on the cross.”

“It was a power so great that it shattered the last fortress – death. It was a power so great that it made atonement for all the sin of all the world. It was a power so great that it provided for those who would accept it the ability to live victoriously like children of God in fellowship with Him WHO MADE THE WORLD AND THE SUN AND THE MOON AND THE STARS.” (End of Quote)

The point is:

“IF WE METAPHORIZE THE HANDS OF CREATION, WHY THEN

SHOULD WE NOT METAPHORIZE THE NAIL-PIERCED

HANDS OF RE-CREATION AND REDEMPTION?”

If the metaphorizers of the Bible are allowed to blow smoke over the creative fingers of God, then too the cross may be but a metaphor for commitment to a cause, and the bloodied hands and fingers of Jesus a metaphor for the price that may have to be payed for that commitment. That is about all that comes out of today’s liberal seminary’s theological think-tanks.

Hear this:

“IF THE CREATION ACCOUNT IS METAPHORIZED, IT WILL BECOME

MUSHY IN OUR HEADS, AND MINIMIZED IN OUR HEARTS.”

But I must add a serious caution here:

“JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE TAKE THE BIBLE LITERALLY, DOES

NOT MEAN THAT THEY TAKE THE BIBLE SERIOUSLY.”

Robert C. Morgan in his book Lift High The Cross, tells about a woman who has a gift shop on the Via Doloroso in Jerusalem. Her name is Frieda Hannah, and she is a Palestinian Christian. A teacher tells about being in her shop one day with a group of students. Another large group of people were in the shop too. All of the members of the group from America had their Bibles under their arms and crosses hanging around their necks. They were pushing and shoving, demanding to be waited on.

A group of Palestinian beggars had followed the Bible-toting Americans into the shop asking for money. The Christian tourists were indignant, saying to Frieda, “Get those kids out of here, why don’t they stay in Jordan where they belong.” The teacher was embarrassed and apologized for his fellow Americans, even though he did not know them. Frieda’s response was, “I have learned long ago that many who take the Bible literally do not take the Bible seriously.”

SECOND, we are being told that to really find the inside scoop about creation, we cannot go to Moses but we must go to the scientists. According to scientists and astronomers, even religious ones, God did not because He could not have created the universe and all that it contains, including the earth, in six days. They espouse a hybrid theory of evolutionary creationism in which the earth, sun, moon, and stars etc. evolved over millions of years. And after all, so scientists ask us, how could the light of the sun, moon, and the stars, which takes zillions of years to arrive on earth, arrive in a day?

So then:

“MOSES IS BUT THE BRAKEMAN IN THE CABOOSE OF CREATION

WHO CAN’T REALLY SEE WHAT WENT ON, WHILE THE

SCIENTIST IS THE ENGINEER IN THE LOCOMOTIVE

OF CREATION GUIDING US THROUGH

CREATION REALITY.”

Frankly, rather than listening to today’s preachers and professors who metaphorize the Bible’s creation account in favor of science, that time could be better spent mowing the lawn or discovering a cure for cancer. All you will get from these modern metaphorizers is science with an ever fainter biblical echo.

As if the supernatural God is bound by natural law!  As if the Lord must exercise universal compliance with the laws of nature that He Himself created! God can finger dart a beam of light into our eyes from anywhere in the universe in a second without breaking a sweat or a law simply because He is God. The Supernatural Creator never has been, is not now, and never will be ruled by the natural or 24 hour days.

Listen:

“THE ETERNAL GOD IS NOT BOUND BY TIME, AND IF YOU CHECK

MICHELANGELO’S FRESCO, THE ARM OF GOD IS

NOT WEARING A WATCH. GOD IS NOT

BOUND BY TIME IN CREATION, HE

IS CREATING IT.”

Listen again:

“THE CREATION ACCOUNT IN GENESIS AND THROUGHOUT

THE BIBLE IS NOT A SCIENCE FAIR FOR ASTRONOMERS,

BUT IT IS THE SUPERNATURAL, MIRACLE, CREATION

STORY FOR BELIEVERS.”

The tragic and pathetic fact today in colleges and seminaries and churches is this:

“WHEN CREATIONISTS TALK TO PROFESSORS IN RELIGIOUS

LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES AND SEMINARIES ABOUT

CREATION, THEY CAN NO LONGER FIND A THREAD

OF MUTUAL AGREEMENT IN THE DIVINE

FABRIC OF CREATION.”

If you will:

“LIBERAL TEACHERS AND PROFESSORS AND PREACHERS ARE

MUCH MORE IMPRESSED WITH THE SPEED OF LIGHT

THAN THEY ARE WITH THE FINGERS OF

DIVINE POWER AND SKILL.”

Now the Bible facts! Our God is so incomprehensibly great and powerful and skillful, that He sat down one day and in that period crocheted and needle-worked with His fingers the sun, the moon, the stars, and all of the galaxies into a cosmic quilt of extravagant beauty. And we think that the Amish are skillful quilters! No insult to our Amish brothers and sisters who believe in the Master Crocheter more than most religious sophisticates and intellectual elites today. And for God it was all in a day’s work. God finger-flashed into being the light bearers of the outer spaces of the universe in a day, while my flashlight doesn’t work half the time!

Oh, by the way, when we read in the Word of God about the signs and wonders in the Heavens that shall mark the ending and the end of time (Joel 2:30-31, Acts 2:19-20), just bear this in mind when major disturbances in the heavens increase in these last days:

“THE SAME HANDS THAT KNIT THE HEAVENS

CAN UNRAVEL THEM WITH BUT A

TWITCH OF HIS FINGER.”

The cosmic trigger finger of God according to the Scriptures will grow very itchy in the last days, and we can count on the fact that He will pull His trigger more often. Solar flares, tumbling asteroids, electro magnetic pulses, F5 tornadoes, massive hurricanes, and only God knows what signs and wonders in the heavens He has planned to strike the fear of God into the hearts of the godless and the worshipers of science.

In the action movie “Twister” there is a scene where the fearless storm chasers have gone to Aunt Meg’s house to have a respite from their harrowing experiences. While consuming a southwestern meal of steak and eggs and discussing past adventures, Dr. Melissa Reeves (played by Jami Gertz) asks if there is such as thing as an F5 tornado and if anyone has ever seen one. (A tornado classified as an F5 would be the largest tornado possible and would be extremely rare. The F in F5 refers to the Fuji-ta scale which is used to measure the size and intensity of the storm based upon the damage assessment.) When one of the team indicates in the affirmative, Dr. Reeves continues by asking, “How would you describe it?” The answer given – the Finger of God.

The eternal, almighty fingers of God will never grow old, wrinkled, weathered, warn, or crooked with age like the fingers of man. God’s fingers will write the last chapters of human history as they turn off the lights of this universe that they turned on in the first place. And then God with those same eternal fingers will create new heavens and a new earth. (Revelation 21:1)

In Acts 21:1 we read the account of Paul the Apostle stopping at the Island of Rhodes. Rhodes is an island off the south west coast of Asia Minor. Tradition tells of Paul preaching there. At one time it was remarkable chiefly for its Colossus of brass, seventy cubits high, with each finger as large as an ordinary man, standing astride over the mouth of the harbor, so that ships in full sail passed between its legs. One of the ‘seven wonders of the world’, the colossus was set up in 288 B.C. and destroyed about 25 years later in an earthquake. These “fingers” made by man did not last very long, but the Divine fingers that made man will last forever!

2. THE FINGER OF GOD’S LAW

Cecil B. De Mille in his film “The Ten Commandments,” did rather well with this part of sacred history. He had a blast showing the ball of fire etching something upon stone. That film would have bored people to death if they could have seen the real thing.

Moses had climbed up Mt. Sinai to hear from God. Moses relates that when God spoke to him, it was like consuming fire. Moses listened to God for 40 days and 40 nights. I am sure that God had Moses’ attention and that there was no nodding off during the Divine monologue. And what God said to Moses was not to be entrusted to memory, even to the memory of a perfectionist like Moses. We read in Exodus 31:18,

“And when He (the Lord) had finished speaking with him

(Moses) upon Mt. Sinai, He gave Moses the two

tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone,

written by the finger of God.”

The “Tablets of the Testimony” mean also “The Tablets of the Covenant” which God had entered into with His covenant people. On these tablets were The Ten Commandments that the children of Israel would have to obey to fulfill their part of the Covenant. We read in Exodus 24:12,

“Now the Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to Me on the

mountain and remain there, and I will give you the

stone tablets with the law and the commandment

which I have written for their instruction.”

Let’s get this straight here. If you are going to engrave something in stone, you need a chisel and hammer to get the job done. But not God! It does not say that the law of God was chiseled or carved in stone. What we do read in Exodus 31:18 is this,

“…tablets of stone written by the finger of God.”

The word “Written” means that “The Ten Commandments” were supernaturally inscribed by the finger of God into stone tablets.

If we check further into this miracle, we find this in Exodus 32:15-16,

“…tablets which were written on both sides; they were

written on one side and the other.”

“And the tablets were God’s work, and the writing was

God’s writing engraved on the tablets.”

FIRST, this means that Moses had nothing to do with it. It was all of God. The Ten Commandments are totally and solely of Divine origin. They are not human in source, but totally divine in source. God supernaturally with His finger wrote His own character and nature in stone by revealing Himself in His perfect law. He wrote on both sides of the stone tablets which means there was no room for Moses to write anything of his own initiative or to add on his own. The tablet work was God’s work and the writing of The Ten Commandments was totally God’s writing.

When we obey or disobey The Ten Commandments, we are not obeying or disobeying cultural norms or societal standards. These are not the laws of Moses. These are not laws of men. These are not the laws of the church. These are the laws of God! If you will:

“THE ABSOLUTELY OBLIGING AND MANDATORY NATURE

OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IS NOT THE LAWS

THEMSELVES, BUT THE DIVINE LAWGIVER

OF THOSE LAWS.”

And again:

“BECAUSE ALL OBEDIENCE AND DISOBEDIENCE OF THE LAWS OF

GOD IS OBEDIENCE AND DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD, OBEDIENCE

TO GOD IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF OBEDIENCE ON EARTH,

AND DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD IS THE LOWEST FORM

OF DISOBEDIENCE ON EARTH.”

When someone commits adultery with a fellow worker in the office, he and she are not just breaking company manners or etiquette. They are not even ultimately breaking the 7^th commandment of God. The fact is that they are disobeying the Almighty, Holy God Himself.

No wonder that King David, like a boxer who has had enough of the beating from his opponent, in this case the heavyweight-prophet Nathan, when he was finally brought to acknowledge to God his adultery and murder, he confessed in Psalm 51:4,

“Against Thee and Thee only have I sinned, and done

what is evil in Thy sight….”

American justices of the Supreme Court in their banning of The Ten Commandments of God from schools and from public places are literally trying to erase the handwriting of God as if it is so much graffiti. The human justices and legislators are attempting to delete the holy inscriptions of the Divine Legislator Himself. Can we even begin to imagine the affront to the Divine Lawgiver in telling Him that He is not the Boss but that they are the bosses? The society and government that does such a thing will not long stand.

It is one thing to break God’s law, but it is quite another to outlaw God’s law. Oh the unspeakable defiance of it all! If anyone is looking for the definition of the word AUDACITY, well my friend, here you have it. I have met audacious personalities in my life, but this is Satanic in its proportions. These little flyweight justices and legislators better throw their towel into the ring now and submit to God and His laws, for if they don’t, they will be one day soon have their audacious brains beat out with one Divine finger, and they will never rise up against God again.

I tell you:

“HE THAT SINS AGAINST THE DIVINE LAW IS BAD ENOUGH,

BUT HE THAT MAKES THE LAW OF GOD ILLEGAL IS THE

WORST AND SHALL BE DEALT WITH THE HARSHEST,

AND GOD’S HANDWRITING AGAINST THEM WILL

NEVER BE ERASED.”

SECOND, now we must note more specifically, and that is that the Laws of God were written by the finger of God in stone. Remember what we read in Exodus 31:18,

“And when He (God) had finished speaking with him

(Moses) upon Mt. Sinai, He gave Moses the two

tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone,

written by the finger of God.”

No, not on parchment or scrolls as was the means of writing in those days.

There are few things in God’s finger creation that are more enduring than certain types of stone. In fact, the oldest recorded writings of man have always been in stone. Even metals are inferior to stone, like iron, as they rust and oxidize into nothingness. So what the Divine Lawgiver and Stone Inscriber does here is this:

“GOD USES THE MOST INDESTRUCTIBLE OF MATERIALS

TO ILLUSTRATE THE INDESTRUCTIBLENESS AND

UNCHANGEABLENESS OF HIS LAWS.”

If you will:

“GOD’S TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE THE EXPRESSION OF

HIS UNCHANGING AND UNCHANGEABLE NATURE.”

And again:

“THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE THE UNCHANGING

MORAL MIND OF GOD – STONE.”

We have to grasp now what we are about to say. Our people must grasp it too, big time. Much of what follows takes place in the think tanks of universities and law schools across America. But they graduate their students into the American society with anything but UNCHANGING DIVINE LAWS OF STONE in their minds. And they become our legislators and judges and justices.

What are we talking about? First, what it is can be traced way back to the 1870s at Harvard when Christopher Langdell, Dean of the Harvard Law School, began to apply Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to the law. Constitutional lawyer John W. Whitehead writes that Langdell’s real impact on law education in America was his belief that the basic principles and doctrines of the law were the products of an ever evolving and growing process over many years.

At first lawyers and teachers in other law schools were highly critical of Langdell’s notions. Soon, however, his students became lawyers and professors at these same and other law schools, applying the theory of evolution to law, meaning:

“NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE BUT IS ALWAYS EVOLVING“

(Mary Elaine Swanson , John Locke – Philosopher

of American Liberty)

But it has gone far more comprehensive than this. The theory of evolution is not limited to human evolution, but includes law and religion so that people in schools and in churches are now being taught and preached at with the following:

“THE UNIVERSAL NATURE OF EVOLUTION MUST BE

ACKNOWLEDGED AND ACCEPTED AS THE

ALL-PERVADING PROCESS.”

So then:

“IN MODERN RELIGION, IT HAS RESULTED IN CASTING

ASIDE THE IN-STONE MORAL TEACHING OF THE

BIBLE, IN FAVOR OF THE EVER-CHANGING

NORMS OF SOCIETY.”

I could give you numerous examples of the Darwinizing of morality in the modern church (the church’s acceptance of modern society’s norms of fornication, adultery, abortion, divorce, homosexuality, gay marriage etc. etc.). Never forget this:

“ALL OF THE LAWS OF GOD, NATURAL AND MORAL,

HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER CHANGE.”

A man who does not breathe cannot live! We must breathe, eat, sleep, and nothing changes or can change those natural laws. Natural law never changes, because God’s natural laws do not evolve. They are etched in stone. So too, God’s spiritual and moral laws never change. We may choose to ignore them or choose to observe them. We may feel good or bad about them. We may love them like the psalmist or hate them like the devil. They remain unchanged in stone forever.

We talk of breaking the laws of God. Really no law of God can be broken anymore than the finger of God can be broken by man. In that sense we remember the words of John 10:35,

“…and the Scripture cannot be broken.”

Therefore, when we disobey the laws of God, we don’t break the Scriptures, we break ourselves. There is nothing fragile about the finger of God or about the laws of God, for the former is supernaturally powerful, and the latter are indestructibly set in stone. When the bug hits the windshield of the car, it does not break the windshield, it splatters itself against it. When the violator of Gods law hits the stone Decalogue, he or she does not break the stone but busts himself into pieces against it.

It is no wonder that our anti-God, anti-Decalogue society is all busted up in every aspect. Broken lives, broken marriages, broken families, broken cities, broken government – brokenness everywhere. You can be dull and yet feel the sharp impact of what we are saying. Unless we relearn and embrace this, and change our lives accordingly, all of the lectures in our law schools frankly are little more than worthless chit chat. And until America reinstates the Laws of God, all of the teachings in our law schools will be music to the devil’s ears.

Read Deuteronomy 28 where you will find as clearly as the nose on your face that:

“OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMANDMENTS ALWAYS BRINGS BLESSINGS

WHILE DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMANDMENTS

ALWAYS BRINGS CURSES.”

Hear me:

“EVERY BROKEN LIFE, BROKEN MARRIAGE, AND BROKEN

FAMILY IN THE WORLD IS BECAUSE PEOPLE OF

DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD HAVE SMASHED

THEMSELVES AND OTHERS WITH

THEM BY BEING AGAINST THE

STONE LAWS OF GOD.”

Hear me:

“EVERY BLESSED LIFE, BLESSED MARRIAGE, AND BLESSED

FAMILY IN THE WORLD IS BLESSED BECAUSE PEOPLE

OF OBEDIENCE TO GOD HAVE SANCTIFIED

THEMSELVES AND OTHERS WITH

THEM BY BEING FOR THE

STONE LAWS OF GOD.”

****FOOTNOTE:

So intent is God that we obey and live by His laws, that not only will He wash away our sin by the blood of Jesus if we repent and believe, but He will remove our stone cold hearts and give us soft hearts of love. Then, upon that soft heart, God will write with His finger His perfect law. So that not only will we know the law, but we will want to, desire to, rejoice to love and keep God’s laws.

Where does it say that? We read in Hebrews 10:16,

“I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their

minds will I write them.”

You say, “That’s incredible, that’s greater than Mt. Sinai and the stone tablets!” Yes it is, and that means that duty becomes desire, command becomes compunction, injunction becomes instinct, and law becomes love. That is what it means to have the law of God written by His finger upon our minds and hearts.

Jesus wants our obedience to come from a heart of love and not fear. He said in John 14:15,

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

Love cannot be forced! Frederick William I ruled Prussia in the early 18th century. Frederick walked the streets of Berlin unattended, and when anyone displeased him, he did not hesitate to use his walking stick to thrash them. Berliners tried to keep their distance.

One time, as Frederick William was pounding down the street, a citizen spied him too late, and his attempt to slide quietly into a doorway proved a failure. “You,” called out Frederick William, “where are you going?” “Into the house, Your Majesty,” said the citizen trembling violently. “Into the house?” asked the emperor.” “Your house?” “No,” replied the poor man. “Why are you entering then?” asked Frederick.

And the poor citizen, fearing that he might be accused of burglary, finally decided to tell the truth and said, “In order to avoid you, Your Majesty.” Frederick William frowned and said, “To avoid me? Why?” “Because I fear you, Your Majesty.” Frederick William promptly turned purple and, lifting his cudgel, pounced citizen’s shoulder, crying, “Your are not supposed to fear me. You are supposed to love me. LOVE ME, SCUM, LOVE ME.”

God wants us to love Him from the heart, and to obey Him from the heart. Christianity is not a law affair, it is a love affair or if is nothing.

3. THE FINGER OF DELIVERANCE

The Finger of God in action again – always in action! Never a dull moment as God flexes His finger/fingers all around us. For baseball batters we are told that, “It’s all in the wrist.” For football quarterbacks we are told that, “It’s all in the arm.” Well, for God it would very much seem that, “Its all in His finger/fingers.”

One would not think that when it comes to casting out demons and the powers of darkness, that God’s finger would be the main, operative force. I mean, how about lightning and thunder and fire from Heaven? Electrocute the demon invaders! Scare the devil out of them! Fry them! That sounds more like it! Come on God, pull out the big guns and let them have it! At the least bare Your mighty arm and pound the dickens out of them. But what can You God do against the powers of Hell with a mere finger? What is this, finger wrestling like we used to do to pin each others thumbs down?

But you see, we are not talking here about finger/fingers as we humanly know them. We are talking about the finger of God, and for God that is more than enough. As a matter of fact His pinky would be plenty. That is the God we serve! He fingers demons and with His powerful and holy finger expels them from the demon possessed and oppressed. Yes indeed, it’s all in God’s finger!

We read in Luke 11:14,

“And He (Jesus) was casting out a demon, and it was dumb,

and it came about when the demon had gone out, the

dumb man spoke; and the multitudes marveled.”

Then Jesus said in Luke 11:20,

“And if I cast out demons by THE FINGER OF GOD, then

the Kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Standing there watching were the Pharisees, the dried up and spiritually impotent religious authorities of the Jews who didn’t have enough power in their whole bodies to drive a flea off a dog. Puffed up like blimps with self-righteousness and legal knowledge, yet they were spiritually bankrupt and powerless in their legalism and self-satisfaction.

These religious potentates could not understand or explain why they themselves didn’t have such power and authority. Nor could they explain why some of their sons had gone after Jesus, and now also had the power to point at and cast out demons with the finger of God. As a matter of fact, I believe that their sons were now followers of Christ, and no-doubt were among the 70 disciples in Luke 10 who were given power by the Son of God over diseases, sickness, and all sorts of demons.

What an embarrassing state of affairs, impotent church leaders who oppose Jesus Christ, and their potent sons who embrace Jesus Christ.

So Jesus turns the tables on His critics who had accused Him of being in cahoots with Beelzebul (the dark lord of the flies), and who they say gave Jesus power over demons. Jesus hits home hard and asks them in Luke 11:19,

“And if I by Beezebul cast out demons, by whom do your

sons cast them out? Consequently they shall be

your judges.”

I am sure that standing there were some of their own sons, and Jesus POINTED THEM OUT. And because they believed in Jesus and ministered in His power and authority and were casting out demons with that very same finger of God, Jesus says to His critics and accusers, “By whose power do your sons cast out demons?” Touche Brute! Slam dunk!

Come now, since you accuse the Son of God of fraternizing with Beelzebul, what about your sons? And then He adds, “And they shall be your judges some day.” In other words Jesus was saying, “You are judging Me, but your own sons who are casting out demons just as I am will one day judge you and turn your false accusations about Me back in your faces.”

We must get this and get it big and get it good! All that Jesus had to do was wiggle His finger of authority at the demons and the demons again and again broke their necks to get out of the way. And now listen, this is the exact point of the passage:

“JESUS GIVES HIS SAME FINGER-OF-GOD-POINTING POWER

TO THOSE WHO SUBMIT TO HIM AS THEIR

LORD AND SAVIOR.”

We as disciples of Christ have the same power in Jesus’ name that the sons of the Pharisees had to finger the devil in those demonized circumstances, locales, and people around us. Hear me:

“IT IS TIME THAT WE SHORE UP OUR ERODED SENSE OF

DISCIPLESHIP, POINT OUR FINGER IN THE NAME OF

JESUS AT WASHINGTON D.C., AND DRIVE THE

DEMONIC FORCES OUT OF THE WHITE

HOUSE, THE CONGRESS, AND

THE SUPREME COURT.”

Hear me again:

“IT IS TIME THAT WE STOP ACTING LIKE LITTLE LEAGUE OUTFIELDERS,

AND START ACTING LIKE MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHERS WHO HURL

THEIR FINGER-OF-GOD FAST BALLS AT CORRUPT

GOVERNMENT FIGURES AND STRIKE

THEM OUT.”

I am not telling you that we are finger-pointing wizards, and that we run out of here like Don Quixote to charge every windmill. But as the Spirit of God reveals to us by His gift of discernment that we are dealing with demon possession and occupation and control, we like the sons of the Pharisees can and must PRAY AND POINT AND PULVERIZE demons in the name of Jesus as we command them to get out, let go, and vacate the person and the premises. Here is one instance when finger pointing is not only polite, it is supernaturally powerful and absolutely Christlike!

I am reminded of the lady who tells first hand about a ladies group in the church that had devolved into a gossip and attack group, and that when she was there, she felt that arsenal of evil all over that group and room. So she began to pray against the gossipers and gossip demons that had taken control over those women. After she had prayed for some time, suddenly she lifted her hand and pointed her finger all over the room at the demons in every woman, and bound their power in Jesus name all over the place. Suddenly, one of the chief critics and gossips who, now flushed with a deep red, said, “What are we doing here? This is wrong!” She was shaken visibly by the evil power that had held her and now had released her by the finger of God.

The finger of deliverance will not work when it is the finger of judgmentalism and slander. We can point all we want, but the demons of Hell and Satan Himself will feel right at home because he too according to Revelation 12:10 is the accuser of the brethren. He loves gossip and judgmental churches. Demons are all over the walls of such places like flies. If gobs of people in the church would stop pointing their fingers at each other and start pointing them at their own demons, we would see great work done in the church, and the Kingdom of God come powerfully upon earth.

CONCLUSION
