Jesus one day spoke to His disciples some of the most exciting, optimistic, and yet most misunderstood words in all of Scripture, when He said to them in Matthew 17:20,

“…for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it shall move; and nothing shall be impossible to you.”

It is one of the most glorious, powerful, and hopeful promises ever made to the followers of Christ. I believe and embrace to my heart every word of it, but only in the context of the verse.

In all of the sermon preparation and preaching of the Word of God, it must be based upon and flow from TEXT – CONTEXT – HISTORICAL SETTING – ORIGINAL WORD MEANING. Those are the basic principles of sound Bible EXEGESIS without exception. Exegesis means TO GET THE TRUE MEANING FROM the above four elements of sermon preparation and preaching.

Sounds like hard work!? It is, very hard work, and that is why preachers in the Bible are called WORKMEN. Almost sounds like blue collar laborers with a lot of sweat on top. I have often felt that for preachers, Sunday was really the true LABOR DAY. We read in II Timothy 2:15 Paul’s words to the young preacher Timothy,

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a WORKMAN

who does not need to be ashamed, handling

accurately the word of truth.”

We as preachers of the Word of Truth are not FLY-BOYS WHO WING IT BY THE SEAT OF OUR PANTS, but rather FARMERS WHO PLOW BY THE SWEAT OF OUR BROWS.

Modern preaching is infamous for violating the fundamental principles of Biblical hermeneutics by taking texts and even parts of the text, and isolating them from the context in which they are found. Rampant ISOGESIS! That way you can make the Bible say anything that you want it to say! It is better described as screwing up the Bible and people’s minds with a false interpretation and meaning based upon Bible rape, and it happens all the time.

EXORCISTS ARE MOUNTAIN MOVERS

When Jesus made that dramatic promise of Matthew 17:20 to His disciples about speaking to mountains and thereby moving them from here to there, it was in the context of their inability to cast a demon in a demon-possessed boy from in him to out of him. Hear it! We must not forget this and we must not preach it willy nilly in any ole way we please.

Jesus in Matthew 17:20 is not speaking about rearranging the landscape in whatever way suits us, like moving the mountain out of the way from here to there so that we can get better gas mileage on our way to and from work. Anything to save a buck even though it ruins the majesty and beauty of God’s creation. Stop it!

Now then, getting rid of demons from possessed and oppressed people’s lives is here likened by Jesus to mountain moving – yes, moving a mountain. The last time I checked on moving a mountain, even a small part of a mountain, it takes dynamite and heavy equipment the likes of which could effortlessly wipe out a city. Ka-bwaam!

It sounds absolutely ridiculous when we really think about the words that Jesus is using here to describe exorcism – mountain moving! I guess you could say that when we are dealing with demons and demon possession in people lives, we are up against the real heavyweights of the kingdom of darkness.

Listen now! Demons are not featherweights or welterweights or middleweights, and they really are not even heavyweight fighters from Hell either. They are MOUNTAINWEIGHTS! And they know how to stand their ground and even throw their weight around like some sort of mobile, mountain monsters.

Why, even a single boulder rolling down a mountain onto a highway can wipe out an eighteen wheeler and throw it into a thousand foot ravine. That is just one boulder, but apparently their aren’t any boulder-demons unless demons have little boulder-demons. I doubt that, so I guess that there are apparently only mountain demons. Fact is:

“HE WHO COMES AGAINST THE DEMONS OF HUMAN POSSESSION

IN HIS OWN STRENGTH IS TEETERING ON THE

EDGE OF A DEEP PRECIPICE.”

We must understand this from the get-go before we can order a demon to get out of someone. Demons do not give in or leave easily. They have to be forcibly and supernaturally driven out. Did you ever try to move a mountain in your own strength? I wouldn’t advise it! Instant double hernia and ruptured discs and massive coronaries!

The disciples came face to face with this mountainous reality as we hear them say to Jesus about the demon-possessed boy in Matthew 17:19,

“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why

could we not cast it out.”

Mission impossible, at least for them at this point. Jesus didn’t leave them without an answer, as He immediately told them why their exorcism bombed. He said to them in Matthew 17:21 after chiding them for the littleness of their faith,

“BUT this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

I can hear them say, “Oh, now You tell us!” They should have known this by simply watching Jesus’ way of life rooted in prayer and fasting. Hear this:

“WHEN WE ARE DEALING WITH THE DARK SPIRITUAL POWERS,

WE WILL BE DEFEATED IF WE FIGHT AGAINST

THEM IN AND WITH THE FLESH.”

The disciples bounced off that mountain like bugs hitting a windshield, as the demon proved for them to be the immovable object resisting a weak, tsetse fly task force.

Scream your brains out all you want at the mountain, but you are spitting into a hurricane. Mark it well when God says in Zechariah 4:6,

“NOT BY MIGHT AND NOT BY POWER BUT BY MY SPIRIT.”

Listen now about Zechariah 4:6,

“THIS IS NOT A MERE CLICHÉ, BUT RATHER DIVINE ENABLING

WITHOUT WHICH WE WILL BE AS ANEMIC AND INEFFECTIVE

AS THE DEFEATED DISCIPLES. THEY WERE NOT EVEN

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS, LET ALONE MOUNTAIN

MOVERS. THEY PROVED TO BE NOTHING

MORE THAN PEDESTRIANS WHO

WERE PASSING BY.”

THIS KIND OF DEMON

I want us once again to take careful note of the words of Jesus to the disciples in Matthew 17:21,

“BUT THIS KIND does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

BUT THIS KIND! Words of strongest intent! Jesus is not here talking about all demons in one lump, but about different kinds of evil spirits. In other words, it is not correct to say that, “When you have seen one you have seen them all.” Even as we are inclined to say from time to time about the diversity that is humanity, so it is also true in the Kingdom of Darkness:

“IT TAKES ALL KINDS – DEMONS THAT IS.”

Hell is a monolith, and yet it isn’t. I would recommend that you read C. S. Lewis’ Great Divorce for incredible insights into all of this as to what different kinds of demons can do to people. If you have seen one devil, you have not seen them all.That is exactly why we need the Holy Spirit’s crucial gift of discernment, called in I Corinthians 12:10,

…and to another the distinguishing of spirits….”

For instance, there are those kinds of demons who have a hankering for and specialize in sexual lust and perversion, and make as well as sometimes possess sexual predators turning them into out-of-control serial rapists, pedophilia murderers, and frantic-fisting homosexuals.

I hear someone ask, “Are sexual perverts like homosexuals demon possessed?” No, not necessarily, but they are all demonically controlled. And the longer a gay gives himself or herself to demon control and the pervert persists in his or her perversion, the more THIS KIND of demonic power takes over and moves from aiding to AIDS, from control to ownership, from influence to infestation – possession. That is when they, even though blinded by divine judgment, will bust Lot’s door down to get at his male guests like a pack of queer wolves.

Remember:

“WHEN A MAN IS WILLING TO BE RUINED, IT IS THAT WHICH

ALLOWS THE DEVIL ULTIMATELY TO TRIUMPH

AND CONTROL AND POSSESS.”

Listen now:

“EVEN THOUGH THE DEVIL AND HIS DEMONS CANNOT RAPE AND

MURDER AND FIST, YET AS THE ESSENCE OF ALL AND

EVERY EVIL, THEY ENJOY THE SICK

PLEASURES OF ALL SIN

SECOND HAND.”

In my ministry, I have even noticed that these kinds of sexual-predator-perversionist demons have a peculiar but consistent odor that I have not smelled in other kinds of devils. Yes, they stink – very stinky spirits. You have heard of stink bombs? Well, meet the stink demons! You can’t see them, just smell them.

Thank God for the powerful truth of John 8:36 which I have seen many times,

“If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall

be free indeed.”

Then there are THE KIND of demons who are much more cerebral and seek to control if not possess human souls, in particular, their thoughts, so that instead of thinking like Christ they think like the devil. These bad boys are really good at mind games like their mentor who twisted Adam and Eve’s minds into pretzels.

These cerebral kinds of demons are as it were the APOLOGISTS OF HELL convincing men that atheism and agnosticism and deism are really the smartest way to go. They hate God as do all of their demon colleagues, and so to dethrone God they will manipulate people’s minds, especially the minds of professors and students in colleges and seminaries,intofor instance deifying science over Biblical Creationism. If you will:

“IN MOST INSTANCES THEY WILL THROUGH RATIONALISM AND

UNBELIEF DESTROY PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS WHO DIE

OF SPIRITUAL AND MENTAL THIRST, BUT IN OTHER

CASES THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN DESTROY

THEM IS TO GET THEM TO

DRINK POISON.”

You will find Hell’s mind-demons in and around professors through whom they will confirm to any mind, but especially to young searching minds, unbelief, doubt, cynicism, and skepticism. Satan and demons will confirm those things in any life, but particular in classrooms and lecture halls.

Then of course there are THE KIND of demons – principalities and powers – who are power- mongers and have their sights set on kings and rulers and seats of authority and governments. Throughout history all the way up to and including today, you will find demon droppings all over the place in palaces and royal houses and seats of governments.

Yes, in more modern terms, we are talking about the Ceausescus of Romania, the Stalins of Russia, the Mubaraks of Egypt, the Husseins of Iraq, the Assads of Syria, the Kim Jong Ils and Uns of North Korea, and of course, the Hitlers of Germany. When these ruler-demons get ahold of national leaders, they invariably turn them into devilish dictators and tyrants. These demonized-dictator people users and abusers will turn their nations into warehouses, prison camps, concentration camps, and crematoriums. They do not serve the people, but with force, brutal  force if necessary, make the people serve them. In short:

“THIS KIND OF DEMON TURNS NATIONS FROM ‘WE THE PEOPLE‘

TO ‘I THE RULER.'”

In short, this will be THE KIND of demon, and more than likely Satan himself, who will control and possess the antichrist as the world moves toward globalism and a one-world government. Through the antichrist, Satan will have his long desired world domination.

The antichrist will have a strong attachment to the Arabs and the Middle East which we all know is the oil barrel of the world. He will do things like disallowing oil drilling in America both on shore and off shore, because that would screw up his plans for subjugating a super-power like the United States under his global throne. To be the world’s dictator, he must dictate the world’s energy supply.

Now more particularly THE KIND of demon that Jesus was dealing with in the possessed boy! Some believe that Jesus meant in this case, a demon that had for a long period possession of this son, which seems to be indicated from Mark 9:21 when Jesus asked the father of the demon possessed boy,

“How long has this been happening to him?”

And the father said,

“From childhood.”

In other words, this kind means a demon who had longstanding possession of the property, and because of that would not leave his property without a real fight. Could be, but I doubt it.

So listen now:

“THE WORDS ‘THIS KIND’ HERE DO NOT REFER TO

TENURE BUT TO TEMPERAMENT.”

In other words, this kind of demon was an especially nasty sucker, a very mean cuss, a child brutalizer. The kind that has a strong obsession with child torment, torture, sadism, and murder! We read the words of the father to Jesus about his demonically possessed boy in Mark 9:22,

“And it (the demon) has often thrown him both into the fire

and water to destroy him. But if YOU can do anything,

take pity on us and help us.”

The boy would often be thrown into water and into fire by the evil spirit that had taken control of his life. It was constantly trying to burn or drown the lad. We are talking about a real Friday The 13^th scenario here and not a movie. Name this demon Jason or Freddie, for both would fit.

By the way, there are those kinds of demons who like to kill living beings by drowning them, whether man or animal. Equal opportunity drowners. We recall the incredible scene, when a violently demon possessed guy who lived in a graveyard-tombyard, ran to Jesus. The fellow was multiply possessed by a whole bunch of demons who through their head-honch devil introduced themselves to Jesus by the name of LEGION. Remember that?

These legion-demons knew that their tenure in the man was over when they saw Jesus, and they pleaded with Jesus to allow them to come out of the man and go into a herd of 2000 porkers nearby. They love warm bods! That is exactly what happened as they left the tomb dweller and went into the pigs and immediately drove and drowned them in the sea.

Getting back to “Freddie the Fiend” in the demon possessed son. To show us just how cruel and vicious this devil was, when his Dad brought his son to Jesus, he said to Him in Mark 9:17-18,

“Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;”

“and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him to the ground and he

foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and stiffens out….”

We are not dealing with something merely annoying or bothersome here. No, not THIS KIND! We may not trifle with the painful, heartbroken words of the father. This young lad was being crushed under the mountainous weight of hellish bondage and suffering.

Plus he was physically, mentally, and emotionally sick, as his father in Matthew 17:15 called his son a LUNATIC, which word was also used for people with epilepsy.

A huge percentage of Jesus’ earthly ministry was spent in demon exorcism from the lives of the brutally demon-possessed. If the church is really following Christ, so also its ministry will be in the deliverance of those who are being demonically savaged.

By the way, all demons are very bad tempered. They all have rotten attitudes, especially about God and those created in His image. I do not say this as cursing, but the fact is they are all literally mad as Hell, for Hell is the essence of eternal madness. You won’t find one demon who even gives even so much as a hint of liking you, or having a tender spot in his heart for you or anyone else.

THE REBUKE OF DELIVERANCE

We read in Matthew 17:18,

“And Jesus rebuked him (the demon), and the demon came out

of him (the boy), and the boy was cured at once.”

How glorious! How wonderful! How awesome! How gracious! How powerful! A miracle of deliverance and healing! In one second of time! Think of all of the things that the father had tried to do for his possessed son but couldn’t. The poor lad could not in his possessed state tell his Dad what he was going through, for he wasn’t present to his Dad for many years in that with the demon in him he was out of his mind. The days and months and years from a little child on were frozen in one unending moment of diabolical anguish. And now he is a normal, healthy boy! Our God reigns!

We have been privileged to witness Jesus do the same in our ministry over the years. Like the young woman whose body was grotesquely twisted and disfigured, spit constantly running out of her mouth and her mind insane. Then on occasion in the mental institution she would jump out of her wheelchair, get a hold of a nurse or orderly and literally throw him or her down the hallway, and then snap back into her gross deformity. This was not human strength, but demonic power.

You should have seen her the day that Jesus set her free. She was now the most beautiful gal imaginable, beautifully formed, and in her right mind praising Jesus. Unrecognizable! Jesus does make all things new! He really does! It was of the most awesome and miraculous days of our lives.

When Jesus spoke the words of rebuke to the demon, the demon was moved from being in the boy to being out of the boy. Just like that! The boy’s mountain of crushing torment was removed from him. This young lad had been in the solitary confinement of an unending torture chamber. He was set free, just like that. Glory to God! He was totally delivered and healed and given back to his Dad as the son that he had always loved but had not been able to enjoy for many years.

We must note that the word REBUKE inMatthew 17:18 comes from a Greek word which means:

“TO BRING DOWN WEIGHT UPON.”

The full weight of God’s wrath and judgment came upon “Freddy the Fiend” in that moment. It was as if Divine omnipotence reached down out of Heaven, bared its arm, reached into the lad and squished the demon like the slime bag he was, and between the Divine thumb and forefinger it literally in agony squirted out of the boy.

THE KEYS TO DELIVERANCE

When the disciples saw that Jesus had driven the demon from the boy, they were more frustrated and puzzled than they were celebrative. Why? They had encountered this demon-possessed boy earlier. The boy’s father had brought his son to the disciples in the hope that they could help him. They couldn’t! The demon didn’t budge a smidge. So after Jesus had freed the boy instantly, they went in embarrassment to Jesus in private and asked Him in Matthew 17:19,

“…Why could we not cast it out?”

Good question! And very revealing!

THE FIRST KEY TO DELIVERANCE! The reason for their failure becomes immediately evident. Their focus had been on themselves and on their own ability, or should we say on their own inability. WHY COULDN’T WE? At this point in their discipleship journey with Jesus they were self-reliant religious humanists. That is why they were completely inept.

Trusting in one’s self is trusting in nothing. In other words, their faith was miserably weak and failed to deliver the boy of the demon because their faith was in their ability (inability) rather than in God’s ability. Jesus implied that their faith was not even the size of a tiny mustard seed. (Matthew 17:20) Why? Because the object of our faith determines the power or weakness, greatness or smallness of that faith!

Our faith is the reflection of the object of that faith. The disciples truly with their emphasis on themselves were one baby step from total faithlessness. Any seed smaller than a mustard seed is close to being no seed at all. That is why Jesus tells us in Mark 11:22,

“…Have faith in God.”

Meaning also:

“HAVE NO FAITH IN OURSELVES AND ALL FAITH IN GOD.”

I mean, let’s get back to Christ’s mountain-moving analogy for demon exorcism. Who in their right mind would dare to claim that when the mountain on the top picture moves, that it was me or you or them that moved it. There are days that we can’t even move our bowels! Who are we trying to kid but ourselves? Get over this messianic mountain- moving complex.

The first key to mountain moving/demon removing is to realize and admit to ourselves that there are days that we can barely move our carcasses off from the couch. Some self-reliant fleshly religionists talk about moving demons as if it is no more than moving a chair. Don’t move the chair too far, for you are going to need it bad before you even know it.

What was it that Jesus said in John 15:5? Listen:

“Apart from Me you can do no-thing.”

Okay then:

“THE REAL AND LEGITIMATE QUESTION IS NOT, ‘WHY COULDN’T

WE?’ RATHER, THE REAL AND ONLY LEGITIMATE QUESTION

IS, ‘WHATEVER MADE US THINK THAT WE COULD?’”

Quit wasting your breath about your spiritual fighting prowess, and let Jesus breathe into you His breath as we read in John 20:22,

“And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to

them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Well then:

“TO MOVE A MOUNTAIN IN A MOMENT IS A WORK SO

IMPOSSIBLY GREAT, THAT TO ASCRIBE THE WORK

TO ANY HUMAN IS TO ROB GOD OF THE HONOR

OF ONE OF HIS GREATEST WORKS, AND TO

TAKE THE CROWN OFF FROM OMNIPO-

TENCY AND PUT IT ON THE

HEAD OF IMPOTENCY.”

THE SECOND KEY TO DELIVERANCE! It wasn’t just that they were trusting in themselves to be able to order the demon to come out of the boy. They forgot some basic fundamentals of spiritual warfare.

They forgot their boxing gloves in their MOUNTAINWEIGHT BOUT with the devil.

They forgot their racing shoes in the hundred yard dash.

They forgot their oars in shell boat racing.

They forgot their oxygen tanks in deep sea diving.

Yes, I know, these are really misleading analogies, for we are told in the Bible that our weapons are not carnal but spiritual, that is, mighty through God for the pulling down of strongholds. (II Corinthians 10:4) But at least they make a point.

The second key to deliverance is really key two and key three. But we will call them the second key because they are joined in the Bible as one. What is it? The disciples as spiritual warriors were not PRAYING and FASTING as a way of basic training. They failed the contest! They flunked the test! They lost the battle! And the boy remained the devil’s evil, sadistic playground as a result of their failure. How often is that still true today?

The Lord is not talking to them or us about saying a quick prayer and skipping lunch. You know, a quick prayer for a quick cure. You know, giving up fast food for fast deliverance. Such prayer renders fasting powerless and such fasting renders prayer worthless when it comes to driving out the forces of evil from our lives and the lives of others.

But together as our constant spiritual conditioning, fasting and prayer are invincible. Apart and alone they are very vincible. That is what our Lord is telling us. It is a win or lose proposition which is as serious as life and death.

We must take in deeply the scene here. See it for what it is as the keys to success or the non-keys to failure. Jesus spent many all-nighters in prayer in His life, and fasted for as many as forty days and forty nights. Prayer and fasting were not a departure from the norm for our Lord, they were the norm. That is why His ministry on earth was so powerful, and the demon vacated his youthful haunt just as so many others vacated their haunts at Jesus’ prayer and fasting empowered rebukes.

So our Lord took out His “Demon Exorcism Training Manual” for His disciples and we read in Matthew 17:21,

“But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Another way of saying it is:

“But this kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.”

The Bible teaches us this:

“EVEN AS THE PURPOSE OF EATING AND DRINKING IS

TO STRENGTHEN US PHYSICALLY, SO THE PURPOSE

OF PRAYER AND FASTING IS TO STRENGTHEN

US SPIRITUALLY.”

Physical and spiritual conditioning are in fact the polar opposite but both mandatory. Must we eat and drink faithfully to build up and nourish our bodies for the physical battles set before us? Indeed! Must we pray and fast faithfully to build up and nourish our souls for the spiritual battles set before us? Indeed! We had better take the latter as seriously as we take the former, or else we will end up with the disciples being physically fit and spiritually unfit. Physical giants and spiritual midgets. Today it is more like obese physically and skinny spiritually, and the results in both worlds are deadly.

THE THIRD KEY TO DELIVERANCE! Do not be afraid at what you see or hear! Keep your eyes on the Great Exorcist – Jesus Christ – and not on the film The Exorcist. The Bible was written for our instruction, while Hollywood films are produced for sensation. Both dogs and demons can tell when we are afraid and will then go even stronger on the offense.

When God by His Holy Spirit gives us discernment that we are dealing with demon possession, He has authorized us to move that mountain as He did in Mark 9:25,

“…He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, ‘You deaf and

dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him

and do not enter him again.’”

In other words,

“Get out and don’t come back.”

Then what happened is not unusual though visually upsetting as we read in that instance in Mark 9:26,

“And after crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it

came out, and the boy became so much like a corpse, that

most of them said, ‘He is dead.’”

After some very violent protest from the demon, and some rumbling and shaking in the mountain, the demon came out of a possessed boy.

But that is not really all that shocking, for when we really think about it, one would expect some shaking and rumbling when a mountain moves. Surely we can understand that a mountain would not glide smoothly on roller skates out of the boy, you know, a slide-and-glide exorcism. I have never heard or read about a smooth transition in the demon world. It is only the devil trying to have the last word and the final say so as he departs with a fierce display and a last hooray to himself. Sort of like, “So there! Take that!”

Remember too that Satan wanted to be God! He and his demon trainees are incurably proud. They must leave a person with a show, for they are too cocky and self-obsessed to simply depart quietly. They need a grand exit with fanfare even if it is of their own making. Hear me:

“EVEN WHEN DEMON SPIRITS ARE BROUGHT LOW AND SUBMISSIVE,

YET IN THEIR PRIDE THEY WILL CARRY THEIR

HEADS HIGH AND DEFIANT.”

But isn’t that the very nature a mountain? Think about it:

“MOUNTAINS AT THE TOP ARE BARREN BUT LOFTY.

THEY ARE HIGH AND STATELY, AND LOOK

DOWN UPON THE WHOLE WORLD

ABOUT THEM.”

THE FOURTH KEY TO DELIVERANCE! Keep ourselves spiritually and morally pure and clean. Did you notice in the Mark 9:25 episode that we read,

“He (Jesus) rebuked the UNCLEAN SPIRIT….”

But then, there is no such thing as a clean demon. There is a vacuum cleaner that is called by the name “Dirt Devil.” Quite appropriate except that “Dirt Demons” do not suck up dirt but spray and spread it around. More like Hell’s manure spreaders! They are all dirty and smelly. No deodorant will help them. They stink to high heaven and to the lowest hell.

The following principles are all so self-evident, but that is exactly why we miss them simply because they are too obvious and we have become blinded to them. Like:

“WE CANNOT FIGHT UNCLEANNESS WITH UNCLEANNESS, FOR

THAT IS LIKE FIGHTING FIRE WITH GASOLINE.”

And:

“DIRTY EXORCISTS DECLARE THEMSELVES TO THE UNCLEAN

SPIRITS AS THEIR HARMLESS FRIENDS RATHER

THAN THEIR FEARFUL FOES.”

When you really think about it:

“LIKES ATTRACT LIKES AND DO NOT REPEL THEM.”

Once more:

“IF WE COME IN SPIRITUAL AND MORAL DIRTINESS, WE

HAVE IN FACT LEVELED THE BATTLEFIELD WITH

UNCLEAN SPIRITS BEFORE THE BATTLE

EVEN BEGINS.”

A strong beatitude is found in Matthew 5:8,

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

The pure of heart are the only ones who can see God and live to tell about it. And Lord, allow me to state as well:

“BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART, FOR THEY ALONE
