Lie Number 4: Legislating Morality
Lie Number 4. It Is Wrong To Legislate Morality – It Cannot And Must Not Be Done.
That is the incessant cry of our immoral and morally relativistic age. People do not want to know what they are unwilling to obey. It is that simple. And so the cries go up, “Those radical-right wing fanatics are trying to shove their morality down our throats. You cannot force us to do what you think is right. That is wrong. You cannot legislate morality.” But anyone with half a sense about him realizes that if you shove aside the law and reduce law enforcement, you would have moral chaos and debauchery on every street corner in America. Not only can you legislate morality, you absolutely must.
What are we really talking about here? The Ten Commandments of God written by the finger of God and given to Moses on two tablets of stone! You can find them in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. More than that, they are the only Divinely inspired and perfectly inscribed and prescribed laws for human morality. They are the infallible expression of man’s moral duties. They are “Divinely Legislated Morality!” They still continue in force, and will as long as the world and human nature exist. If the “Ten Commandments” were embraced and obeyed by man, there would be no need to deal with the “Top Ten Modern Lies.” So too if legislating morality is not right, then God was wrong. And if legislating morality is foolish, then God is the biggest fool of all, and Moses was His pathetic mountain-man patsy.
And more than all of that, God is a very smart ethicist as well. He is of such infinite wisdom and knowledge that the ten laws that He gave us require universal and forever compliance, for God is not morally nearsighted. When God legislates morality, there can be no future unforeseen situation to which His moral absolutes would not be applicable. In other words, no situation ethics! He is right the first time. He is right every time. In this case He is right ten times. In short, he is right all of the time for all times.
This is exactly why we read in Psalm 119:142, “Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy law is truth.” In other words, what God’s law declares to be right and wrong is everlastingly true. There can only be truly defined right and wrong, virtue and vice, when there is universal and enduring applicability of the moral fiat involved. God, your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness!
So then let us ask the question in another way, “Does America legislate morality?” Oh my does she ever! For instance, the Row V. Wade decision in 1973 made legal “Abortion On Demand.” Did that decision of the Supreme Court legislate morality? On my, did it ever? It made that which the Bible declares to be immoral, nationally moral. Now then, is that legislating morality or not? Since that time millions upon millions have been murdered in the United States. Over 50,000,000 now in the good old USA! In cities like New York and Los Angeles, year after year there are more babies killed than birthed. That is not only legislating morality, but it is the Supreme Court legislating immorality.
Whether it is a “Yes Law” or a “No Law,” morality or immorality is being legislated every day of our lives in the United States. The real and only issue is, “Upon what principles, God’s or the anti-God humanists, will it be legislated?” That is why there is so much confusion and polarization in education, government, and even in churches today. That is why congress has become a sham and a stalemated misery. Some base their legislation on The Bible, and others base theirs upon The Humanist Manifesto. That is why there is such moral schizophrenia in our land. And the only way out of this immoral morass is stated succinctly in Romans 3:4, “…let God (theism) be found true though every man (humanism) be found a liar….”
In all of this, we must never leave people under condemnation. Jesus Christ did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. (John 3:17) Whether you have murdered your child in your womb or in your house, there is no guilt and shame so dark, but that the light of God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ will shine through into your life. It was Corrie ten Boom who once said, “There is no pit so deep but God’s grace is deeper still.”
Maybe you have been in the dark pit of post abortion despair as a mother. The light of God’s grace is shining from Heaven upon you. I can see it! Simply ask Jesus to be your Savior and to forgive you of all your sins. I did, and He did. If you will, He will. Romans 3:24 promises us that we will be justified freely by His grace. You know don’t you what justified means? Justified – just as if had I’d never sinned. I celebrate that in my life every day. Ephesians 1:7 assures us that we have received the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. No more will the darkness of guilt eclipse the Son of God’s love. And Jesus will shine brighter and brighter in your heart unto that perfect day. God bless you, and as a dear friend of mine who is already in Heaven used to pray, so I pray for you, “Please Lord, wrap her up in pure God.”
